Gathering 566 state lottery points of sale

Brazilian state of Santa Catarina to launch internet gambling site

Next week it will be launched a project designed by lottery members of the State of Santa Catarina: a legal online gaming site. The initiative is a pioneer in Brazil. Among the benefits of the initiative would be that the revenue generated could be reversed in investments to the state, especially in health. The launch comes after members of the lottery sector and the employers' union hold a public hearing.

"Among the benefits of the initiative would be that the revenue generated could be reversed in investments to the state, especially in health. There are already private sites, but powered by lottery cooperatives this is the first. It is a project that accompanies the technological evolution and the needs of the clients,” points out the president of the Lotters Guild of Santa Catarina, Gilmar Cechet.

The launch comes after members of the lottery sector in Santa Catarina and the employers' union hold a public hearing to discuss the creation of an online legal gaming site. Involving 566 lottery points in the state, the possibility of placing online bets will transform the current consumer habits of users. "The project generates comfort, practicality and security, everything will be more dynamic to consumers. Bets can also be made by smartphone and at any time," says Gilmar.

In the internal testing phase and preparing to be operational next week, there is still no forecast of the number of users to be reached with the project. "Just to get an idea, in Santa Catarina, lottery houses serve around 4 million users monthly, which means that more than 50% of the state's population goes through physical stores in a month," he says. The second step that the group wants for a near future is the legalization of scratch card.

"We intend to close a partnership with the state to legalize the scratch card. It would be possible in a bakery, pharmacy, convenience stores if you give the change with a scratch card, for example," says Gilmar. According to him, unofficial games move around US$ 315 million per year in Santa Catarina and approximately US$ 6.3 billion in Brazil.

"We need to legalize and generate taxation on these bets as well, but for this we need political support in Santa Catarina. We need to improve the condition of the lottery sector, and also how the state can win on that and reverse investment," concludes Gilmar.
