Luckia to start operating in the Portuguese online market

Spanish gaming operator Luckia finally received the license to operate online gaming in Portugal. The former Egasa is scheduled to start its activity in the Portuguese market in September. “Undoubtedly, closeness for us is important,' explains the company president José González Fuentes.

Luckia, which ended last year with a turnover of 506 million euros, continues its expansion process. The Portuguese market offers proximity and the possibility of gaining presence abroad, although the economic expectations in the neighboring country are limited.

"Our goal is to be present and to grow in size, we do not have much ambition in Portugal because it is a modest country, with a reduced critical mass, but undoubtedly closeness for us is important," explains the company president José González Fuentes. He adds that the tax rate of gambling in Portugal is "very high", so "profitability is not easy".

The Spanish company, that in 2015 changed its name from Egasa to Luckia to facilitate its digital penetration in the international market, has set itself the priority of gaining size and expanding. "We will continue with our internationalization process, giving priority to the implementation in countries where there is a stable regulation and where taxes are weighted," says the company.

For the moment, Luckia's activity in Portugal will be limited to online gaming, a modality that the Portuguese government recently regulated. The company rules out installing casinos or gaming halls in the country, considering it difficult and unattractive for its business.

"Portugal has a very limited regulation of casinos and it is not an easy market, it has an old legislation, there are not many casinos and, with the exception of the Chaves one, they all come from a long time ago. There are also very powerful Portuguese groups. It is a difficult country, although we would be interested due to its proximity and language," argues José González.
