The
legalization of gambling in Brazil is the subject that will warm up the
discussions at the national congress in early 2017. According to Veja's Radar
On Line column, the issue already counts with the support of two-thirds of
parliamentarians to get the approval.
According to the magazine, only deputies or senators linked to religious groups
are against the approval of projects that process in the Houses to legalize and
regulate the gaming activity in Brazil.
In 2016, PLS 186/2014 came closest to being voted by the Senate. The bill was
approved by the Special Committee on National Development in November and sent
to the Senate for a vote. However, by the approval of Senator Magno Malta's
request, the bill was taken to the Senate Constitution and Justice Commission (CJC),
where it will be debated again.
In the Chamber of Deputies, project 442/91 also deals
with the legalization of gaming, but has not yet been appreciated by
parliamentarians. In December, there was a public hearing where members of
civil society also presented their arguments on the subject.
Currently the exploitation of games of chance is considered a criminal
contravention. People involved with the activity can have their equipment
seized and respond to a lawsuit.
