Elections take place on October 7

What is the opinion of Brazilian presidential candidates on gaming legalization?

Next October 7, millions of Brazilians will choose governors, state and federal deputies, senators and the new president of the Republic. In an age of dissatisfaction with politics and distrust of future candidates, the proposals must be known. Here, the opinion of the presidential candidates on a very important issue for the economic and tourist development of the country: legalization and regulation of the gaming industry.

Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB)

The former governor of São Paulo is in favor of legalizing gaming since 2006, a subject he addressed again in May, when he met with some representatives of related parties, such as the president of DEM, ACM Neto, federal deputies Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ, Aguinaldo Ribeiro (PP-PB), Paulinho da Força (SD-SP) and former Minister Marcos Pereira (PRB). "I am in favor of legalizing gaming. The challenge of the modern world is this: the future of employment. Because technology is positive but also generates unemployment. Technology allows you to produce more with fewer people. But the modern economy did not invent consumption without salary," he said.

Already in 2006, Alckmin, said to be favorable to the operation of bingos, since regulated by the Congress. "The bingos can not continue to function in the foggy way it is today," he said when he was approached on the subject during a lecture at the Brazilian Congress of Tourism Activities held in the Chamber. Alckmin pointed out that in São Paulo, there is a bingo house in each block functioning under the backing of injunctions. "It's a mess with the police," he said.

Jair Bolsonaro (PSL)

The PLS candidate is conservative when it comes to the subject. Although he says "in principle" against the release of casinos and other games, he comments that "there is a possibility" of liberation during his Government, but that the allocation would be under state responsibility.

"There is a possibility, I say a possibility, for each state to decide. In principle, I am against, but we will see the best way out," said PSL pre-candidate, speaking at the Rio de Janeiro Trade Association (ACRJ).

Ciro Gomes (PDT)

The PDT candidate has not yet spoken on the topic. In spite of this, some of his party colleagues like Pompeo de Mattos (PDT-RS) are authors of projects that aim at the liberation of certain modalities of gaming. The big trend is for the candidate to avoid this type of more controversial agenda, maintaining a center position during his term.

Henrique Meirelles (MDB)

The Government candidate already spoke on the subject when he was Treasury Minister of the current presidente Temer Government when he highlighted the potential of the activity, estimated at up to R$ 20 billion (US$ 5.3bn) per year. "It would be a new CPMF," he said. At the time (2016), he emphasized that most of the ministers were in favor of the release, but that the final decision would be for President Michel Temer. Meirelles also defends another controversial agenda, which is the release of marijuana.

Marina Silva (REDE)

The candidate has not yet spoken about gaming, but the candidate proposes that other controversial topics, such as the release of marijuana and abortion, be discussed in plebiscites.
