Surpassing others like the transfer

A year after its launch, PIX consolidates itself as a payment method on betting sites in Brazil

Launched a little less than a year ago by the Central Bank of Brazil, the PIX is increasingly consolidating itself as the preferred payment method by Brazilian users, surpassing others such as transfers, DOC or TED – mainly because of its instantaneity and absence of fees. The use of the platform has also arrived with force in several sectors and markets, including online gaming.

That's because the vast majority of casino or sports betting sites already accept PIX as a form of payment for deposits, which makes life easier for players when building a balance to play, bringing security in operations and speed in clearing credit. Thus, it is an excellent alternative for those who do not have a credit card (in some betting sites, an international card is required, which limits customers even more) or accounts in virtual wallets.

It's not just gaming sites that benefit. Caixa itself encourages the use of the PIX for lottery wager payments. As a result, the last Febralot meeting with Caixa pointed out that more than 130 thousand transactions have been carried out since the release of the payment method for the lottery network at the units' terminals.

Although it is not possible to estimate the number of operations via PIX on betting sites, it is to be imagined that the payment method is ahead of others for a number of reasons, as dozens of online gaming operators have implemented PIX and invested in promotional marketing actions to drive the use of the payment platform.

Why is PIX advantageous for players?

Financial clearing time is one of the main factors that make PIX one of the methods most used by customers. On betting and gaming site Bodog, for example, the deposited amount takes no more than 15 minutes to be credited to the account – an improvement over other banking methods, such as the local popular boleto, although it is still longer than virtual wallets. In addition, there is the issue of the operation being 24 hours a day and every day of the week.

As a rule, gambling sites and casinos provide payments through a QR Code key that expires at a certain time, but which facilitates operations, since any cell phone with a camera is capable of reading it quickly.

Another factor that draws attention is the lack of fees that sometimes appear in payment methods such as DOC and TED – eventually charged by banking institutions, and not by the websites themselves.

Although it still requires a bank account to carry out transactions, PIX beats other deposit methods in terms of convenience and can even be used for customers who want to take advantage of promotions such as the welcome deposit bonus.

What can still improve

As it is a 100% national system, PIX is not yet accepted as a form of payment for operations in foreign currency. Many betting sites operating in Brazil still do not accept the real as their currency, which prevents this practical method from being used by bettors. However, with the advance of discussions about the regulation of gaming in the country, the tendency is for this scenario to change.

Another issue that should evolve in the coming years is the withdrawal via PIX, which is still not very common in bookmakers, and the form of payment is only available for deposit operations. However, PIX is a dual payment method, which does not prevent customers from being able to redeem credits through this method, something that is still uncommon.

It is also necessary to be aware of the new PIX rules, applicable to all operations, which naturally include bookmakers and online casinos. One of the main changes, which took effect since the beginning of October, is the limitation of R$1,000 for transfers between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am, which is a security measure imposed by the Central Bank to curb criminal actions.

Despite the caveats, there is no denying that the combination between PIX and online gaming is almost perfect and is here to stay in the Brazilian betting market.
