GMB - Did the Brazilian market need to have a face-to-face event of this level?
Luiz Felipe Maia - An event of this level, produced by professionals of this kind, is essential for the development of the Brazilian market. It will be an excellent opportunity, after two years of pandemic, to resume interactions between international companies, local partners and government authorities, for the exchange of information and knowledge.
Can the strength of BiS and its dissemination in the media help to understand that this industry should be legalized for the benefit of the country?
No doubt! Brazil needs to attract investment and generate jobs and income. Gaming and betting has the capacity to increase investment in tourism, sport and advertising, generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs and billions of reais in investment and income for the country.
What topics will you cover or would like to develop on your panel?
I had the great honor of being invited to speak about what can be legally exploited in the country today. There are opportunities that are not yet known and I intend to present at BiS some ideas that are a little out of the ordinary.
How do you analyze Brazil's growth this year specifically in the gaming market segment where you work and specialize? What are your expectations for 2022?
The development of several state lotteries, the creation of the working group to review Bill 442/91 in the Chamber of Deputies' Tourism Commission and the progress of work at SECAP on the regulation of fixed-quote lottery (sports betting) were outstanding facts in the gaming industry this year. I believe that next year will be full of concrete business opportunities in the country.
Were the results of your company's work this year as expected? Do you have plans in Brazil to grow and contribute more to the local market?
This year 2021 was a very positive year for our office. FYMSA Advogados is growing, we are expanding our headquarters in São Paulo and opening a branch in Europe, to better serve our international clients. We also received four relevant international awards in the gaming industry this year, which represent recognition of our work and dedication to our customers. We are very happy with this result and, at the same time, committed to keeping this level of quality even better.
In the most recent discussions about gaming activity in Brazil, the main players believe that the country is closer than ever to regulation. Do you share the same opinion? Do you believe it is possible to approve all gaming verticals in Brazil during this next year?
We are certainly getting closer and closer to regulation. Sports betting is about to be regulated and other modalities are also under discussion. Personally, I've always been a bit skeptical about approval and regulation of all verticals at the same time, as it's extremely rare in models from other countries: usually this is done gradually. But I share the perception that we are moving in this direction, which is encouraging for those, like me, who understand that the market must be freed up and properly regulated for all modalities.
All about the Brazilian iGaming Summit (BiS)
Due to the health crisis, several events, trade shows and congresses had to be postponed or even canceled throughout 2020 and 2021; however, with the advance of immunization across the country, things are slowly returning to normality. Thus, the Brazilian iGaming Summit (BiS) will take place at Espaço Boulevard JK, in São Paulo, on December 1st and 2nd with the strategic partnership of Games Magazine Brasil, and will be attended by investors and entrepreneurs from diferente sectors such as sports betting, communication, affiliates, lotteries and regulators. For the first time, it will take place in a hybrid model, with real-time broadcasts and big screens spread throughout the conference space.
To ensure the safety of guests, event organizers will respect all recommended health safety protocols. With this, BiS will be the return point of in-person events for the gaming sector in Brazil and a great opportunity to connect entrepreneurs of the gaming market to the country's political personalities and actors involved in the regulation process. They will discuss and analyze what will be the next steps to pass legislation for the sector, and what are the trends for the development of this market in Brazil.
