Chamber’s President probed parliamentarians

Arthur Lira tries to deal with evangelicals to release gaming in Brazil

The president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira, probed evangelical parliamentarians about the bench's willingness to reach an agreement that would make it possible to approve the regulatory framework that allows games of chance in Brazil to be approved by the National Congress. The survey was carried out during a dinner with members of the Evangelical Parliamentary Front last week. To the group, Lira said that his intention would be to 'unite extremes', working in a union on sensitive issues, such as gaming.

The president of the Chamber heard that there is no way for the front to support this proposal, regardless of its content. The so-called “Bible Bench” warned that it had an uncompromising position against the liberalization of games of chance in Brazil.

In September, the president of the Chamber created a working group to try to reach a consensus on the project for the Regulatory Framework for Gaming. The theme has been trying to advance in Congress for over 30 years, but it has never been approved.

The next president of the Evangelical Parliamentary Front in 2022, deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante (DEM-RJ) was at the dinner and warned Lira that the bench would have enough votes to overturn the proposal, if he puts the matter to a vote in the plenary.

With the "warning", evangelical parliamentarians believe that the president of the Chamber will not pick a fight with the bench and with a legion of evangelical faithful in the middle of an election year, for a proposal that will have difficulty in the plenary.

Lira's expectation is that, once the work group is completed, he would be able to vote on the text this year.
