Uruguay decrees closure of State casinos due to increase of COVID-19 cases

The Uruguayan government resolved through a decree to close State casinos until April 12 due to an increase in contagion of COVID-19 cases. 'Private casinos are encouraged to comply with this provision,' issued the same decree, which also establishes the provisional closure of free shops located on the border with Brazil until the same date.

The decree of the Executive Power headed by President Luis Lacalle Pou states in article 12: "The casinos dependent on the Ministry of Economy and Finance will remain closed until April 12, 2021. Private casinos are urged to comply with this provision."

It is the same decree that establishes the "provisional" closure of free shops located on the border with Brazil until April 12, one of the measures announced by the government to stop the growth of positive cases.

At the beginning of the week at a press conference, Lacalle Pou had announced the suspension of face-to-face classes at all levels of education until the culmination of Tourism Week and that public offices will remain closed until April 12, except those that provide essential services.

The objective of these measures adopted by local authorities is to try to contain and reduce the escalation of COVID-19 infections, aggravated by the appearance in Uruguay of the P1 variant of the coronavirus that spread in Manaus, Brazil.

Before knowing the scope of the presidential decree, the National Association of State Casino Officials (Anfuce) had issued a statement saying that “during the course of the pandemic, no gaming room in the country caused outbreaks of COVID-19. This is because we work with a strict sanitary protocol, which was agreed by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) and the Office of Planning and Budget (OPP)."
