WLA and CIBELAE provide webinar on lottery security in Portuguese

With more than 150 registrants and a high level of participation, the World Lottery Association (WLA) and the Corporación Iberoamericana de Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (CIBELAE) held on April 14 and 15 the online webinar “Security before the digital transformation of lotteries”, in which lotteries in Europe and Latin America shared experiences and recommendations on digitization, business continuity and security. Brazil was in focus on the second day of the event, with the participation of Itamar de Carvalho Pereira.

On the first day of the event, the main issue was the adaptations that lotteries had to make in the face of the challenges imposed by the pandemic, in addition to certification of companies and processes.

On the 15th, the new WLA-SCS 2020 security standard was presented to the participants, moderated by Valeria Serpentini, Coordinator of the Security Committee of the World Lottery Association, in which also participated Itamar de Carvalho Pereira, a member of the WLA for 13 years and Technical Adviser of Brazil’s Ministry of Economy, Diego González Quinteros (Uruguay) and Fabien Marechal (France).

At the opening, it was presented the video “Why to get certified?”, which was produced by WLA and CIBELAE, to summarize the WLS-SCS 2020 standard and the procedures and benefits of lottery certification, as well as the issue of security of operations in the gaming sector.

Itamar de Carvalho Pereira, representative of Brazil in the webinar, spoke about the importance of certification by lotteries. “The greatest asset of a state lottery is the confidence of the betting public. In Brazil, the lottery is almost 60 years old and what we value most is the bettor's perception of confidence and the feeling he has when going to a lottery unit and when placing his bet, being sure that it will be registered in the base, will compete andhe will recibe his prize in case of winning. So, the WLA certification comes in this sense, to demonstrate to bettors and stakeholders related to the lottery sector how safe and complete the form of the operation of a state lottery is,” he said.

According to him, this demand is increasingly present by regulators as well as bettors. “Through certification, it is possible to prove through an exempt body that there is a safe, healthy and data protection environment in the operation of a lottery. It allows incorporating best practices from other state lotteries that are best in class. The lotteries in Brazil are on the same level as the lotteries in France, the United Kingdom and Germany,” exemplifies Itamar.

Ultimately, certification, in the assessment of the advisor to the Ministry of Economy of Brazil, can be used as an element of corporate social responsibility, by showing how strong and safe the operation of lotteries in Brazil is.

“With certification, top management is committed to the business as a whole, especially regarding the organization's information security policy. The great advantage is that getting a certification puts the lottery in search of continuous improvement in its products and processes,” he defines, concluding that he recommends “that all state lotteries seek certification as a strong corporate governance act that will bring best practices for their operations.”
