Deputies approve hearing to learn how foreign bookmakers work in Brazil

The Financial Supervision and Control Commission (CFFC) approved Application 29/2021 this week, which invites representatives from the Federal Police, the Federal Revenue Service, the Ministry of Economy and the BNDES learn more about the process of sending money from bookmakers hosted outside the country. The idea is to avoid possible irregularities in an activity that is awaiting definitive regulation soon.

Presented by Deputy Deputy Pablo (PSL / AM), Req 29/2021 wants to hear, as guests:

  • Delegate of the Federal Police of the state of Sergipe responsible for the “Distraction” operation, launched by the agency in early March;
  • Sergipe Federal Revenue Auditor responsible for the audit that triggered the “Distraction” operation;
  • Secretary of Evaluation, Planning, Energy and Lottery of the Ministry of Economy, Pedro Calhman Miranda;
  • BNDES representative responsible for RFI 06/2021, whose object is to contract technical services for structuring the privatization project for sports betting;
  • Representatives of CEF and Banco do Brasil responsible for the segment that allows the use of payment methods by international gambling sites in the country;
  • CBF representative responsible for advertising and marketing contracts.

On Wednesday (28) the application was approved by the members of the Financial Inspection and Control Commission (CFFC) and the justification of Deputy Delegate Pablo is so that it is possible to understand the real need for the implementation of the Inspection and Control Proposal (PFC) 11/2021, presented by deputy Lucas Vergílio (Solidariedade / GO) to better understand the tax and foreign exchange issue when sending money abroad through gambling sites.

The invitation presented by Deputy Deputy Pablo through Req 29/2021 was approved after his manifestation at the CFFC meeting, when the parliamentarian said that “there are many online betting platforms in the country raising funds through games. We know that they are not based in the country, do not generate jobs and do not pay taxes. That is why it is important that we hold a public hearing to find out who is profiting from these demands from the country and at the same time to know if this economic activity is in accordance with the legality that the Brazilian state offers,” he defended.

Congressman Orlando Silva (PCdoB / SP) asked to subscribe the application and pointed out that “football, one of the main cultural phenomena in Brazil, has betting sites as one of its main financiers. It is not necessarily a problem, but it is important that we observe the standard of operation, rules and tax matters.”
