Macau’s gaming revenue rises in April, recovery is still fragile

April was once again a month of growth for the gaming industry in Macau. According to the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Department, the figures represented the best performance since the beginning of the pandemic. Despite a growth of more than 1000% compared to the same month in 2020, it is still fragile if compared with the same period of 2019. GGR in April surpassed the mark of US$1 billion, an increase of 1% in relation to March.

Macau's revenues stood at US$ 1.05 billion, which, in percentage terms, represents an increase of 1014.4% compared to the same period in 2020. Even so, April's gross revenue is still 64% below of the values recorded before the covid-19 pandemic.

The increase is, however, still fragile and a far away from the US$ 2.95 billion raised in April 2019, before the impact of the pandemic on the Macau economy. At the end of 2019, gaming revenues were US$ 36.57 billion.

As for the gross revenue accumulated in the first four months of the year, it reached U $ 4 billion until April. It reflects a variation of 2.6% more compared to the US$ 3.91 billion in the same period last year.

In 2020, under the effect of the pandemic, casinos in Macau ended the year with revenues of US$ 7.55 billion, just over 20% of the amount registered in the previous year.
