Maranhão bets in raffle up to R$ 10,000 to encourage vaccination against COVID

Brazilian state of Maranhão announced that it will draw up to R$10,000 in prizes next week for those who complete the vaccination schedule. The award will be in the form of food purchase cards ranging from R$1,000 to R$10,000. The announcement should encourage the population to take the second dose. The action comes in the wake of what has been happening in the United States and other parts of the world that seek to attract people to get vaccinated.

While governors enter the dispute to see who applies the first dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 faster in the entire adult population, Flávio Dino (PCdoB), from Maranhão, announced that he will draw up to R$ 10,000 in prizes next week for those who complete the vaccination schedule.

The award will be in the form of food purchase cards ranging from R$1,000 to R$10,000. Before, those who received the immunizing agent also received cornmeal in "camps of immunization", where the application of doses occurred uninterruptedly on weekends. The action comes in the wake of what has happened in the United States, where states offer donuts, beer and even marijuana for those who get immunized.

With 210,000 extra doses, São Luís already applies the first dose to people from 26 years old, outside of priority groups, and even registers the so-called “vaccine tourism”. The capital strengthened immunization after registering the first six cases of the Delta variant in the country after a ship with infected crew docked off its coast on 14 May.

At least eight states have already defined a schedule to immunize adults aged 18 and over without comorbidities. São Paulo, Pará, Goiás and Rio Grande do Sul intend to apply the first dose in this entire group by September. Without coordinated management, other places, such as the Federal District, stopped on the calendar and immunize citizens aged 50 and over.

Vacinometer data from the Ministry of Health show that Maranhão has already applied 2,285,099 doses until this Tuesday night. Of this total, 1,739,885 correspond to the first dose, equivalent to 76.14%, and the other 545,214 (23.85%), to the second dose.
