Corinthians dismisses Danilo Avelar after racial offenses in eSports game

Left-back Danilo Avelar is no longer part of the Corinthians squad. The information was disclosed by the Sao Paulo club itself in an official statement, as a result of the episode in which the player, during an eSports match, had racist and misogynistic behavior by showing contempt for women. The fact occurred on Tuesday night, when the player posted the phrase 'son of a black girl' to a rival during a match of Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO).

Danilo Avelar, 32, entered electronic sports five months ago. The athlete is one of the partners of Bears eSports, organization of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

The case took enormous proportions and Corinthians said it would investigate the case this Wednesday. The press conference of defender João Victor was cancelled. Then, the club announced earlier in the evening that Avelar will no longer be part of the team's plans.

Avelar expressed regret and published it on his social networks after the case took enormous proportions. On his Twitter, he posted:

“I want to admit my mistake. What I wrote during the game does not match what I think and what I will teach my son. I was offended by a foreign player in my condition as a Brazilian. I lost my mind, but unfortunately I made the situation worse: I made the serious mistake of writing a sentence with a racist connotation to an opponent.”

For its part, the club expressed in the official release:

Sport Club Corinthians Paulista informs that it is in contact with the athlete Danilo Avelar and his representatives in order to discuss and formalize the appropriate measures to terminate the relationship.

Corinthians reaffirms that it repudiates any and all manifestations of racist connotation, consistent with its history of defending equality and democracy.
