The Casino hotel has been "in a state of abandonment" for some time, which "worries us a lot," Mayor Alicia Espíndola told newspaper La Diaria Colonia. She added that "there are already companies from Argentina- interested in participating in this international tender that "have contacted the local municipality."
The company that takes over the hotel will also be able to exploit the private casino that will be installed in that place "in exchange for the investment that must be made," Espíndola explained.
"When the process advances we will see if the new hotel is made from a refurbishment of the old building or if they use its structure to make something new." Espíndola regretted that the Casino hotel, "an emblem of Carmelo that is 90 years old," has not had "the necessary care in recent years." She recalled that this complex "was very frequented by Argentine tourists."
That building belongs to the Uruguayan State but it has been granted in concession to private entrepreneurs in different periods, and "now it has returned to the hands of the Ministry of Tourism and that is why the tender is being made," he added.
Espíndola also confirmed an investment in Calera de las Huérfanas, which had already been announced by the Ministry of Tourism. "There will be an investment of close to one million dollars to improve the environment that surrounds the park and the Calera de las Huérfanas facilities," she stressed.
