Betsson reports all-time high operating profit in Q2 2021

Betsson has reported its most successful quarter ever in terms of earnings before interest and tax (EBIT), which are expected to amount to between €36.8m - €37.7m. This is an estimated increase of up to 39.4% compared to Q1, and a rise of 76.8% year-on-year. The company contributed this to a rise of sportsbook use during the Copa América and the Euro 2020 tournaments, along with a high sportsbook margin.

The quarter saw an increase in active customer numbers of around 25% per cent compared to the same quarter last year, driven by an increased sportsbook activity. The sportsbook turnover increased by 73% compared with Q2 2020.

The sportsbook margin was approximately 8.5% for the quarter, compared to the eight-quarter rolling average margin of around 7.4%.

The higher sportsbook margin is to a large extent explained by favourable outcomes in the initial phases of the two football tournaments. The strong sportsbook revenue contribution has also been strengthened by Betsson being an official sponsor of the Copa América.

Betsson informed that the total operating income was also boosted by the reversal of a US$ 2.5m sanction from the Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, which was overruled by the Swedish Administrative Court last month.

Spelinspektionen chose not to appeal the decision.

The company’s full Q2 2021 results will be available next July 22nd.
