Rio’s assembly approves not claimed Loterj prizes go to Paralympic Committee

Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj) prizes not claimed by winners may be transferred to the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB). This is what determines the bill 374/15 that the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) approved this Wednesday (11) in a single discussion. The text will go to Governor Cláudio Castro, who has up to 15 working days to sanction or veto it.

The purpose of the proposal is to sponsor high-performance athletes in modalities recognized by the International Paralympic Committee. The new text also complements Decree-Law 138/75, which created Loterj, determining that after discounting 30% of the lottery's net profit to a specific fund, the remaining amount of profit is invested for the purposes of hospital and school assistance, from social, sporting, cultural and educational interests or contributed to the Brazilian Paralympic Committee and the Rio State Social Security Fund (Rioprevidência).

The Executive will regulate the standard and how much each area and body will receive from Loterj's profits.

The measure was originally authored by deputy Bebeto (Pode), licensed deputy Thiago Pampolha and former state parliamentarians Dica, Flávio Bolsonaro, Geraldo Pudim, Paulo Ramos, Pedro Fernandes and Tânia Rodrigues.

“We know how difficult it is to get sponsorship in sports and that many athletes sacrifice to follow their exercise routine. Without money, many just have a great love for the sport, which makes them willing to pursue their careers. Many give up on the way due to lack of structure,” explained Bebeto.
