Venezuela authorizes reopening of casinos after 10 years

After almost a decade since the closure of casinos and bingo halls in Venezuela by order of then-President Hugo Chávez, his successor Nicolás Maduro is preparing to reopen the doors to gambling by authorizing the reopening of 30 casinos throughout the country. While one has already been inaugurated in the Hotel Pipo de Maracay, in Aragua state, more openings are expected in the coming weeks.

In January 2020, President Maduro had referred to the return of the casinos to Venezuela when announcing the opening of an “International Casino at the Humboldt Hotel” located at El Ávila.

At that time, it was stated that this casino would work with the cryptocurrency ‘petros’ launched by the president himself in order to promote its use. But that did not happen, and the gaming venue opened with a poker tournament where US dollars were used for registration and play.

After that failed experience, the local media Tal Cual unofficially revealed that at least 30 casinos were authorized to operate again. In fact, one of them has already opened its doors: the ‘Ciudad Jardín Casino’, located in the Hotel Pipo de Maracay, Aragua state, which held its inauguration on the night of August 31.

As reported, during the next few days, openings are expected in Caracas (Hotel Dubai, Waldorf, Conami, Tamanaco and transfer of the casino from the Hotel Humboldt to the Eurobuilding); Miranda (Coliseo, Macaracuay, La Cáscara, La Urbina and Buenaventura); Nueva Esparta (Charaima, Caribe Plaza and Concorde); Lara (Tiuna, Lidotel and Jirajara); and Aragua (Platinum and Ballagio, in addition to the Ciudad Jardín at the Hotel Pipo, already opened).

The opening of rooms is also expected in Zulia (Del Sur, Maruma and Inter de Maracaibo); Bolívar (Roraima and Guayana); Falcón (Baywasht, Tucacas); Carabobo (Inter de Valencia); Anzoátegui (Sun Casino); Barinas (Center Llanos) and Portuguesa (Eco Inn).
