Online lottery sales in Brazil took off with USD 800 million Powerball

TheLotter, the online lottery messenger service in Brazil, is reporting a huge number of lottery tickets this week after the American Powerball accumulated on Wednesday (26) night. The US Powerball jackpot went up to USD 800 million after no one hit the numbers. Eager to take part in Saturday (29) night's monumental draw, a growing number of Brazilians took advantage of theLotter's online lottery service to try their luck.

"Along with Mega Millions, Powerball is famous for producing very large jackpots," said Adrian Cooremans, theLotter spokesman: "Three ticket owners shared the USD 1,586 billion Powerball jackpot in 2016, when Mega Millions broke a record in October 2018 when a single South Carolina player won the entire USD 1.537 billion jackpot. And just three months ago, on July 29, Mega Millions rose again to the USD 1,337 billion milestone. Powerball has a good chance of passing that number soon, and if its USD 800 million jackpot is not won, the first prize will pass the billion-dollar mark."

"Brazilians are increasingly finding the online way to foreign lotteries, and with the current sales volume, it's only a matter of time before a Brazilian wins. We've had huge winners in Panama and El Salvador, so it would be fantastic if this time a Brazilian took a large amount," Cooremans added.

Since August 3that no one hits the jackpot, with this, the prize is already the fifth largest in U.S. history. There were 36 consecutive draws without a jackpot winner. The new jackpot amount is USD 800 million for winners who choose to receive the prize split over 29 years. However, almost all winners choose the option to withdraw the amount at once in cash, which would be USD 383.7 million after tax is paid.

theLotter is a worldwide company, regulated and officially licensed by the government of the European country Malta. The company employs messengers who buy official paper lottery tickets on behalf of customers who buy online.

"Competing sites only acquire an insurance policy to cover the possibility of customer numbers being drawn - they don't buy the real tickets. We always follow the rules of the lottery and the laws of each country in which we operate," Cooremans said.

The biggest lottery prize to date in the U.S. was a USD 1.586 billion Powerball prize that went out to three players in 2016. The Powerball costs USD 2 and is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Under Powerball rules, there is no need to be a citizen or U.S. resident to play and win American lotteries. Thus, by using theLotter's online lottery ticketing service, the bettor participates in Powerball draws with official tickets, having the same chance of winning as anyone else who bought the tickets at a physical store.
