Lula's communication coordinator defends regulation of sports betting and gaming in Brazil

Edinho Silva, communications coordinator for President-elect Lula's transition team, defended on TV Bandeirantes' show Canal Livre on Sunday (20), the regulation of the gaming sector as a source of revenue for Brazil. 'We have to look for new sources of funding' and gaming and betting sites were two alternatives pointed out by him, who is also mayor of Araraquara, in the state of São Paulo.

For Edinho Silva, mayor of Araraquara and communication coordinator of the transition team of president-elect Lula, it is absurd for the country not to raise with sports betting. "How are we talking about children outside the school with the avalanche of bets that Brazil has lived being made outside the country without any taxation?" asked journalists Fernando Mitre, André Basbaum, Lana Canepa and Rodolfo Schneider.

For Silva, it is necessary that Brazil seek new sources of funding for, among others, education, "who lives in a pitiful situation." He said there are untaxed sectors, which is absurd. Asked by Schneider what these sectors would be, Edinho was categorical: "gaming!"

He said that sports betting is made abroad without any counterpart to the public coffers and pointed out that "studies say that the regulation of gaming would generate R$ 23 billion in the first year. With these resources, we would have an educational compensation program for children who have been out of school since the pandemic."

Although he did not advocate the regulation of gaming as a government program or transition team, the mayor of Araraquara pointed out that it is a personal opinion that defends. "I'm defending. I'm not on the transition team in the economic area, but I stand for it. This money should be used for education and educational infrastructure."

The coordinator admits that the topic is controversial, but did not refuse to put his personal opinion on the subject, not confirming whether the regulation of the activity will be defended by the PT.

Anyway, the politician had already expressed himself on other occasions on the subject without ever stating that it was a position of his political party. And since taking over the coordination, he has never confirmed that actions to regulate gaming and betting would be handled directly by the transition group that has fronted Geraldo Alckmin, vice president elected with Lula.
