Rivaldo' senior career began in 1991, when he joined Santa Cruz FC. He moved to Mogi Mirim in 1992 and to Corinthians in 1993. The respective year, he changed clubs, first to Palmeiras, then to Deportivo, where he stayed for one season to participate in La Liga. In 1997, he joined Barcelona in a swap agreement with Deportivo.
In five years with Barcelona, he made 157 appearances and scored 86 goals, winning La Liga in 1998 and 1999 and the Copa del Rey in 1998. Rivaldo has signed a three-year contract with Italian Serie A club Milan. With AC Milan, he won the Coppa Italia and the Champions League in 2002-2003.
His other major clubs were Olympiacos in Greece (2004-2007) and FC Bunyodkor in Uzbekistan (2008-2010), with brief appearances with a few others. Before retiring in 2015, Rivaldo was a member of the Brazilian team Mogi Mirim. Rivaldo was named La Liga Foreign Player of the Year in 1997 and led the Copa del Rey scoring chart. He was called FIFA World Player of the Year, FIFA World Player of the Year, and Copa America's Most Valuable Player after winning the Ballon d'Or in 1999. He had the most points in the tournament. In 2000, he was titled the UEFA Champions League Top Scorer, the IFFHS World Top Goal Scorer of the Year, and a bronze medalist in the FIFA World Player of the Year.
