An Article published this Monday (19) on the Minas Gerais portal O Tempo deals with alternatives and betting possibilities in markets other than sports in general and football in particular.
It's hard not to associate the online betting market with sports, especially football. Not by chance, many bookmakers print the uniforms of Brazilian clubs and have great names in the sport as their poster boys, such as Ronaldo Fenômeno and Vini Jr.
But it's not just football that moves this universe. The world of bets brings together a multitude of possibilities, which can range from the weather forecast at airports around the world to major entertainment awards such as the Oscar and the Grammy.
Brazilian television is also part of this universe and it is possible to bet on shows such as "Big Brother" and "A Fazenda". It was even with a guess made during "BBB 21" that journalist Fernando Valverde, 31, started to embark on entertainment bets.
“I usually bet on sporting events, but when we were in the pandemic without being able to leave the house, I followed my first 'BBB', which was the one with Babu and Manu Gavassi. I ended up getting involved with the show and, when there was the following, from Juliette, I saw that the site I was betting on had also opened bets on 'BBB'”, he recalls.
With the habit of being very active on social networks, the journalist watched the growth of Juliette's fans and was guided by this force when choosing his guess on the champion. “Her odds were good, so I decided to play the game,” he says.
At the time, the journalist bet around BRL 2,000 on the participant, with a return of BRL 9,000 when the victory was confirmed. “With Arthur (Aguiar, winner of the last edition of the reality show) it was the same thing. I already had that expertise from the first one and I combined it with observation of movement on social networks and fans,” he explains.
Keeping up with the show - although it seems obvious - was also essential for the bets he made to pay off. So much so that the journalist's first bet on "BBB 22" was on Natália Deodato, from Minas Gerais, who was chased around the house and grew among the public. The guess, however, ended up changing because of the participant's movement in the game. Arthur's growth on "Big Brother" - and also on the web - ended up making him decide to invest money in the participant and, at the end of the program, he had another positive return.
How to bet well on entertainment
Prepared to continue betting on the next edition of the Rede Globo show, Fernando Valverde gives some tips for those who want to enter the universe of bets. The first of them - and one of the most important - is the observation of social networks. “They are a thermometer for the fans. The fandoms also make a big difference, especially with this cabin and popcorn story. In the 'BBB 20', for example, the fans of Manu Gavassi and Rafa Kalimann were preponderant for the elimination of Babu and Prior. At 'BBB 21', Juliette's fandom was formed in a resounding way,” he explains.
The journalist, who also makes bets involving sports - mainly football -, points out some advantages of bets made in entertainment-related events. “The bets end up being more advantageous and comfortable, because the results are much less volatile. In football, for example, things can change in seconds,” he points out.
But although the results may seem more guaranteed in bets made in the cinema or on reality shows, for example, it is possible to lose. It is precisely for this reason that Fernando stresses the importance of being psychologically armored when betting. “When you lose one or two in a row, you can start to get anxious, worried that you need to catch up. That's why it's good to have a lot of mental control and prepare yourself psychologically for losses. Betting is not a sure investment. You can win or lose,” he says.
Market that moves billions
According to data from the company BNL Data, the Brazilian betting market moved more than R$7 billion in 2020 alone. The amount should grow even more, since the expectation is that this value will reach R$12 billion next year. The phenomenon is also not very different around the world, so much so that the estimate is that by the end of this year, the betting market will reach a value of US$ 63.5 billion.
Specialist in online betting, journalist Caio Bitencourt believes that the success of this business model can be justified, above all, by people's own belief in their intuitions, whether in football matches, awards or other events.
“Of course, there is also the dream that these hunches can be capitalized and that people can earn from them,” he says. In times of economic instability, the possibility of earning extra money is also attractive.
The simplicity of the process can also be another factor that corroborates the success of the model, since there are not many requirements when placing a bet. To place a bet, for example, the person interested only needs to register on a betting site, deposit an amount of money - which can be done by PIX or credit cards in most places - and choose an event to bet on.
“There is also the possibility that bookmakers give a bonus. Unavailable for withdrawal, they can encourage people to continue playing and, in cases of victory, convert the bonus into cash,” explains Caio.
The ABC of bets
The betting vocabulary is full of specific terms - most of them in English. To help understand a little more about this universe, journalist Caio Bittencourt helped prepare a glossary with the most important words and expressions in this universe.
Bet: bet, in simple translation into Portuguese.
Banking: Cash available in the bookmaker's wallet.
Operator: Term used to name bookmakers
Free bet: these are types of bonuses offered by bookmakers. They can only be used once. If the result is confirmed and the bet is correct, the bettor disburses only the value of the profit of the bet made.
Bookmaker or bookies: English term used to define the operators of the betting houses. They can also refer to the individuals who guide the bets.
Cashout: Modality that allows to withdraw money before the end of the event. This feature guarantees a portion of the reward to the player and reduces the amount disbursed by the betting operator.
Quotation or odds: Evaluation of bookmakers and the market on the probability that a certain event will happen. For example, if you bet on a BBB participant as the winner of a wall and the odd is calculated at 2, you will receive BRL 2 for every BRL 1 bet if the guess is right.
Underdog: This term is related to the least quoted option to win. In the case of entertainment, for example, it can indicate participants, films or songs that are less likely to win in what they compete for - Oscars, music charts or reality shows like Big Brother are some of the betting options.
Favorite: The opposite of underdog, indicates the most quoted option to win.
Bad run: Expression used to indicate the bad phase of a bettor, usually when he loses several times in a row.
Green or red: Terms used to indicate the outcome of the bet. If it's a winner, it's green. If you lose, red.
