Bolsonaro asks for votes against legalizing gambling, but PL will support

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL - Liberal Party) sent a message to the cell phone of deputies asking for the rejection of the bill that legalizes gambling, such as casinos and bingos, but his party, the PL, must submit a vote for the proposal's approval. The vote is expected to take place in the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies late this evening.

Bolsonaro's message reached parliamentarians at dawn. "Heads up! Item number 2 on today's agenda will be the legalization of gambling. I ask you to vote against such a project. Thanks. President Jair Bolsonaro,” says the text, sent by the president’s personal cell phone to some of his allies – not all consulted by Valor received it.

The project faces resistance from the evangelical bench, the president's main electoral base, and also from Catholics. The agenda is taken up, on the other hand, by some of its main ministers, such as the head of the Civil House, Ciro Nogueira, and by the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL). Valdemar da Costa Neto, president of the PL, is another enthusiast of the idea.

Bolsonaro's party should vote in favor of the project, according to the leader of the PL in the Chamber, deputy Altineu Cortês (RJ). “Most party deputies are in favor of the project, with the exception of evangelicals,” he said. “The position of the government and personally of the president is against the project, but several deputies and base parties are in favor,” he justified.

According to Côrtes, one of the reasons for the support is that the rapporteur of the project, deputy Felipe Carreras (PSB-PE), accepted his amendment so that 10% of the collection with the legalization of the gaming sector is destined for the construction of houses for families that now live in risk areas, such as those who died recently in the landslides in Petrópolis (RJ).

The PSL, where most of Bolsonaro's "ideological" allies are, should not be against the project either. The leader, deputy Major Vitor Hugo (GO), intends to release the bench, without taking a position against or in favor, because of internal differences.

The PT, the biggest opposition party to Bolsonaro and his main opponent in the October election, declared its position against the project.
