Fantasy games fever inspires Arena 22 to become main eSports player in Brazil

The fantasy games segment in Brazil has grown strongly and already moves between R$ 55 and R$ 66 million annually (US$11m to US$14m). To accompany this new wave in the market, Arena 22, the official DFS platform for the Copa do Nordeste, aims to become the main player in the country. With the end of the tournament approaching, the company will launch the “Short Shot” modality (per round) for the Brazilian Championships of Series A and B.

The passion for football has taken on proportions outside the pitch, encouraging fans to find ways to show their knowledge. One of them is through betting platforms. According to research carried out by TechNavio, a company focused on studies of global markets and new technologies, the fantasy games market, valued at US$ 26 billion, is expected to grow 120% by 2026. Last year, the North American market alone moved the equivalent to US$ 9.25 billion.

In Brazil, the segment moves in revenue from R$ 55 to 66 million per year (US$11m to US$14m). Thus, one of the newly created fantasy games that has stood out in this segment is Arena 22, a platform that has experienced exponential growth in its user base since it became the official fantasy game of the Copa do Nordeste this year. In addition, the platform allows the user to make their predictions on various national and international championships, in various formats in addition to traditional fantasy.

With the end of this tournament approaching, Arena 22 will have Fantasy ‘Short Shot’ modality (per round) for the Brazilian Championships of Series A and B to take advantage of the participation of the big clubs in the Northeast. “Recognizing that the Northeastern fan crowd is really large, very passionate and represented by true football fans, we want to continue serving this audience with entertainment and sports competitions,” says David Gough, head of Arena 22.

Conceived in 2020 by the inspiration of businessman Jorge Luiz Ribeiro, founder of the websites Sorte Online and LottoCap, Arena 22's growth plan foresees to compete with major players in the market and to be the main destination for Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) players in Brazil.

The creator of Arena 22 set his sights on the success of this multibillion-dollar industry, which has the United States as the world's largest market and as its exponents the websites Draft Kings and FanDuel, and on the irresistible attraction of fantasy games from the main European championships, whose highlights the UEFA Champions League (European Champions League), the Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain), the Bundesliga (Germany) and Serie A (Italy).

By observing and analyzing this entire universe, David Gough used his experience in the area of digital products, e-commerce and business intelligence to add differentials to the platform. “We see new opportunities in this market and improve the game with the implementation of several modalities, such as Fantasy, Score, Survivor and Winner – all in the format of “Short Shot” tournaments, that is, offering the user the opportunity to participate in championships per round. In this way, unlike traditional fantasy, you don't have to wait for the entire championship to be over to know who won, and still have the possibility to play in tournaments and cash prizes,” he points out. David Gough already signals that the future of the platform may be the inclusion of other sports, not just focusing on football.

“The possibility of growth in this market is huge in Brazil, as it already happens in America and Europe, even because of the passion that Brazilians have for football and also because of the recent approval of the basic text of the project to legalize betting in Brazil, such as bingos, casinos, horse racing and online games, among others, by the Chamber of Deputies,” he explains.

According to the businessman, Bill 442/91 is very beneficial for the sector, as it will encourage job creation, income growth, expansion of state revenue, providing greater transparency and providing greater security to customers and the market as a whole, since the current legislation predates the existence of the internet.
