Sporting becomes first European club to adopt Betano's phygital experience in sports betting

Still in a state of grace after winning the national championship after 20 years, Sporting CP recently became the first European club to adopt the phygital experience in sports betting. As a result of a partnership with the online sportsbook Betano (official sponsor) and 4YouSee Arenas, Sporting started to allow all those who travel to the Alvalade Stadium to view the match odds in real time on the digital lines of the pitch - updated quotes for a given event to happen – while it is happening.

This union between what happens in the games held at the stadium of the club with the wide choice of odds available for betting on the Betano digital platform aims to bring elements of the routine, increasingly digital, to the experiences of the physical world.

This partnership was made possible through the use of 4YouSee Arenas technology, which integrates the betting platform and its own content management system, in addition to actively managing the space, so that the information displayed on the platform is mirrored in the digital lines, with special attention to the different moments of the game and the odds that will be shown.

When announcing the partnership, Victor Kzam, account manager at 4YouSee Arenas, was excited about the potential of this innovative technology for the betting experience of those who visit Estádio José de Alvalade:

We are excited about the application of technology to display updated odds in real time, a tool that is still little explored in sports venues around the world. However, the most important thing will be to show the right information for each moment, like a corner and the probability of striker Coates scoring. I believe it will have an impact on fans who have fun betting and watching their favorite games and it will also increase, even more, Betano's communication to follow Sporting CP games.

This enthusiasm was extended to José Almeida, marketing manager at Betano Portugal, who highlighted the online bookmaker’s satisfaction for being able to “offer supporters with information and betting opportunities that are contextualized according to the incidents of the game,” also adding that “this technology is really differentiating and we believe that this initiative is a milestone in the way we can communicate with our users.”

Sporting is the first club in Europe to use this type of dynamic communication in the stadium, while Miguel Botelho de Sousa, Sporting CP's director of business segments, underlines that it is "of extreme importance for the club and for Sporting members and supporters, as it allows us to be part of a totally innovative and impactful digital experience.”

Online sports betting captivates more and more Portuguese

The fascination of the Portuguese by the phenomenon of online sports betting is growing.

The greatest search for knowledge by Portuguese bettors, but also, and above all, the easy access to platforms through smartphones and the diversity of games and bonuses that many bookmakers and specialized portals offer to those who are new to the art of online sports betting are contributing to an extraordinary growth not only in the number of players, but also in the revenue generated.

According to the most recent report by the Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ), an entity that oversees and regulates online gambling activity in Portugal, the number of Portuguese online gamblers has grown exponentially over the last few years and, in the first In the nine months of 2021, it exceeded 2 million, 743 thousand more gamblers than in the same period of 2020.

Of these, in the third quarter of last year alone, 39.9% placed bets exclusively on online sports betting, 27.5% only played games of chance and 32.6% played online games in both categories.

When compared to the last quarter of 2020, these data indicate that the number of bettors who bet in both categories in relation to those who bet exclusively on games of chance, has increased, which means that more and more Portuguese people place their " chips” in sports betting.

In the first nine months of 2021, the sports betting category totaled 1,025.6 billion euros in betting volume, a value that represented a growth of 55.6% compared to the same period in 2020. In terms of gross revenues, on September 30, online sports betting accounted for total gains of around 186.3 million euros.

As would be expected, in this category, football was the main sport for Portuguese bettors during the first nine months of the year, with a share of bettors around 82.10%.

The competitions that captured the highest number of bets were the Portuguese Primeira Liga and UEFA Champions League with 10.1% of the total volume of bets placed on the sport, followed by the Spanish La Liga and the English Premier League with, respectively, 5.1 % and 4.4%.

In second place on this list, but already far from football, is tennis with 13.29%, a percentage to which the absence of the NBA contributed a lot, whose championship only started in late October. In this modality, the competitions that most attracted the attention of bettors were the United States Open, competition where the highest volume of bets was observed (18.4%), and the legendary Wimbledon Open (8.4%).
