Rapporteur at Brazil's Chamber

Felipe Carreras will include eSports in the Pelé Law

The rapporteur for the modernization of the Pelé Law, deputy Felipe Carreras (PSB-PE), will include eSports in the sports regulation package that will be discussed in Brazil. The industry approves the suggestion, having struggled last year when the House tried to address the issue in the gambling bill. The modality advocates that the activity be treated as a skill.

Carreras will define as “virtual sport” the online competition that demands “eminently intellectual exercise and dexterity”, with pre-defined rules.

The Pelé Law dates back to 1998 and hasn't received major changes since 2013, when eSports had fewer players and resources.

In fantasy games, for example, players compete over the internet based on the performance of real-life athletes, such as football championships. Abroad, this modality is recognized as a skill game.

Therefore, the modality seeks to distance itself from the discussion of games of chance, such as casinos or jogo do bicho, which have other characteristics and are rejected by the evangelical bench.

At the same time, the sports betting industry awaits regulation in the country, which has a deadline until December this year.
