Bolsonaro speaks again against gambling liberation in Brazil before evangelicals

In a speech during an event with religious in the capital of Amazonas on Saturday (27), President Jair Bolsonaro repeated his opposition to the release of gambling in Brazil. He walked the streets of Manaus and greeted followers for hours in search of support for his presidential reelection. The speech was made at the ‘Marcha para Jesus’ (March for Jesus) event, at the sambadrome in the capital of Manaus.

In front of an audience of evangelicals during the ‘March for Jesus’ in Manaus, the Brazilian President stated that the Free Zone will not be affected by the government's economic measures. "The Manaus Free Trade Zone will never be affected by this government. This government reduces taxes throughout Brazil and the tax reduction is beneficial for the entire country. Nobody will lose anything here by reducing taxes such as IPI Tax on Industrialized Products. I have never seen a country grow by increasing or creating new taxes," he said.

In a brief conservative speech, the president said he was against abortion, as well as those who defend it. "We have one God. Anyone who serves two Gods is not worthy of representing us. We are against gender ideology. We respect our children in the classroom. We are against drug liberation. We are also against the liberation of gambling in Brazil," he said to an audience of evangelicals who accompanied the march in the capital of Amazonas.

In the Datafolha poll released this week, Bolsonaro has 39% of voting intentions among evangelicals for the first round of the election, while former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) appears with 36%, in a technical tie at the edge of the margin of error of two percentage points.

It is worth remembering that Bolsonaro had already stated last February that he will veto the bill that legalizes gambling in Brazil if the text is taken to sanction. The proposal was approved in the Chamber of Deputies and will be analyzed in the Senate.

“What I have already decided here and the entire House knows and the presidents of the House and Senate also know: once approved, we will exercise our right of veto. To override it, the veto is nominal, in the Chamber there must be 257 voting 'no', half plus 1 of 513. I find it difficult to overturn the veto. But if the House overthrows it, it goes to the Senate,” he declared.

The chief executive regretted the approval of the text and said that he tried to defeat the proposal with allies in Congress. The project deals with casinos, bingos, jogo do bicho and online gaming, which may have licenses on a permanent basis or for a determined period.

“The Chamber, everyone knows, and the Senate also have autonomy. Some want me to disapprove or approve certain things there. I have my limit. I did what I could with some parliamentarians closest to us to see if the project was defeated there, unfortunately it was approved,” he said.
