Sports betting firms in Brazil will be forced to warn on addiction in marketing actions

Sports betting companies will have to adapt their marketing after the federal government decrees the regulation of the activity in Brazil. The Ministry of Economy will force companies to present, in advertising material, warnings about the harm of irresponsible gambling, such as the risk of addiction. Notices must appear on physical tickets and on websites where bets are placed.

Campaigns that suggest gambling as a solution to financial concerns or that present gambling as an alternative to personal, professional or educational problems will not be allowed.

Among other prohibitions, firm’s marketing actions will not be able to suggest that the punter can master the game through the development of personal skills. Advertising that relates gaming to personal and financial success will also be vetoed.

The rules must come into force with the decree that regulates sports betting. If not modified, this draft decree proposal would be the definitive one and the document is ready for Bolsonaro to sign.

Last week, Games Magazine Brasil had exclusive access to the draft of the long-awaited presidential decree that regulates the sports betting market in the country.

The text does not limit the number of operators in the national territory and establishes an authorization fee of R$ 22.2 million (US$ 4.5 million) valid for five years.

To qualify, the company must be established in Brazil and those that already operate will have six months to adapt to the new provisions. The Ministry of Economy will be responsible for regulating and authorizing.

The wording of the decree was concerned with issues such as the promotion of informative and preventive actions to raise awareness of gamblers and prevention of pathological gambling disorder, through the elaboration of codes of conduct and dissemination of good practices. Among other actions, international certifications on responsible gaming will be required from the operator.

In addition, sports events subject to bets must have actions to mitigate results manipulation and corruption in real sports-themed events.
