Evangelical bench blocks the decree

Deputy Marco Feliciano on the veto of sports betting PM: “door to casinos”

Deputy Marco Feliciano said he convinced Jair Bolsonaro to shelve the decree that would regulate sports betting because he considers the practice harmful to the evangelical faith. “I am an evangelical pastor. I was elected to represent this segment. We are against any type of game that involves betting for money. That's the door to the casinos,” said Feliciano to Guilherme Amado's column in Metrópoles.

The decree, which had the favorable articulation of the Chief Minister of the Civil House, Ciro Nogueira, has nothing to do with the bill to legalize gambling.

The text focused exclusively on the activity of companies that operate sports betting, already legalized by the Michel Temer government.

According to an estimate made by André Gelfi, partner in Brazil of the Swedish group Betsson, the unregulated market should move R$ 60 billion (US$ 12b) this year.

Calculations show that the country could collect R$ 6.4 billion (US$ 1.3b), of which R$ 800 million (US$ 160m) from corporate taxes, R$ 2.2 billion (US$ 441m) from the granting of licenses and R$ 3.4 billion (US$ 681m) from income tax on awards.

Feliciano discredits the numbers. "The 'estimates' were made by the most interested in the subject, without any transparency with regard to how they arrived at this value," said the deputy.

The information that Feliciano acted to convince Bolsonaro not to take the PM forward was published by columnist Lauro Jardim.
