Opening the discussion, Thomas Carvalhaes, regional director of VDB, commented that payment operators are fundamental partners, but that today they are experiencing a moment of adaptation, as are bookmakers.
“Without payment methods, we have no operation. Without the traffic made by the affiliates either. All partners are of great importance. However, I believe that we, as operators, had to adapt by finding ways to make the business work; payment providers have also had to reinvent themselves through a lack of regulation, which is the moment we have, to actually make the business happen,” he stated.
Betcris' Business Development Director, Fernando Garita, stated that the different payment methods are already part of everyone's daily life, however, he expects a regulation that expands the operation options for the entire financial system.
“A regulation in which not only payment methods, but the entire banking structure opens its doors more and more, will be better for everyone, including the State at the tax level. It will be controlled, safe and free to use for all people,” he explained.
Filippos Antonopoulos, CEO of Okto, highlighted the importance of payment methods for a good user experience and that the biggest challenge is to be able to perform an automatic service. “The user experience should be similar to other forms of e-commerce. In this case, that is fast, has automatic settlement, also the payout. The operation of gaming has a distinct thing, people pay, but they also receive money. Therefore, the speed of receiving the award automatically is also important. This is difficult, it always has been, even in Europe; in the case of a transitional regulation it becomes even more difficult,” he explained.
Still in the field of challenges related to payment methods, Thomas Carvalhaes stated that operators that follow regulations from different jurisdictions end up limiting the customer and highlighted the difficulty of using a credit card for betting.
“I've seen operation where the Curacao licensed payment method applies limits of Malta jurisdiction, which makes no sense. Another limit challenge due to the lack of regulation is in relation to the credit card. This is a nightmare for us because 75% of operations end up blocked. This is one of the great challenges due to the lack of a regulatory structure,” says the regional director of the VDB.
Finally, Filippos Antonopoulos commented that the giant Brazilian market is very promising, but that it takes time for regulation to interfere with the good progress of the sector, which can alienate good operators. “We are very happy working on the country's banking system. On the other hand, we expect a lot from regulation. An entire market in transit is not very good. The transit process is normal; on a trip you can change planes, but nobody wants to stay in a terminal for days,” he concluded.
