Aeronautical engineer Alexandre Ywata, Master in Statistics from the University of Brasília (UnB) and PhD from Northwestern University (USA), will assume the Special Secretariat for Productivity and Competitiveness of the Ministry of Economy, the body responsible for regulating sports betting in Brazil. He replaces Daniella Marques, who has just been named president of Caixa Econômica Federal.
Ywata was a professor at the University of British Columbia, in Canada, and held high positions at Caixa Econômica Federal, as VP of the Risk and Investment Fund areas. He is one of the top executives with good relationship with the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes.
The regulation of sports betting is in the hands of the secretariat to which Ywata was appointed. Discussed in the last three and a half years, the measure awaits the signature of the presidential decree that will regulate the activity in Brazil.
During this week’s Brazilian iGaming Summit (BiS), government authorities, including Geanluca Lorenzon and Iuri Castro, respectively secretary and undersecretary of Advocacy for Competition and Competitiveness of the Ministry of Economy, stated that a mature regulation with the best international practices is yet to be implemented and that now the decision is more political than technical.
In any case, after the signing of the decree, according to the directors, the ancillary sub-regulations will be prepared for the effective start of the regulated operations of sports betting in Brazil. They have ensured that it will be out as soon as possible and will be in line with international best practice.
