Best ever May sees US gaming sector on track for record breaking year

March, April, and May have been the three most lucrative months of gaming revenue in US history with each month flying past GGR of US$5 billion. Thus, the sector is well on its way to a record-setting yearly revenue with GGR in the first five months hitting US$24.39bn, marking an increase of 20.6% from 2021. The information comes courtesy of the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker.

The month of May 2022 saw commercial land-based casinos, sportsbooks, and online casinos generating GGR of US$5.03bn, making May 2022 the best ever May and the second-highest ever monthly total in history. This was up 7.9% on May 2021.

Slots and tables generated US$4.13bn, an increase of 1.4% on May 2021, making it the third-highest monthly total ever for slots and tables. Table revenue increased 10.5% cent to US$873.9m with slot revenue down 0.1% at US$2.94bn.

Retail and online sportsbooks generated US$487.5m in May, up 78.2% from 2021. Online gaming, which is currently allowed in Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, generated US$406.4m in May, up 30.9%.

Five months, only four states are lagging behind what they generated for the first five months of 2021. These were the District of Columbia, which was down 21.2%, Kansas, which was down 0.8%, Mississippi, down 2.5%, and South Dakota, down 1.9%.

For the year so far, slot and table GGR has hit US$19.7bn, 13.9% up from the same period of 2021. Sports betting revenue has reached US$2.64bn, marking an increase of 73.5% ahead. Online gaming for the first five months hit US$2.03bn, up 45.6% from 2021.
