In partnership with El Cabriton and the Cartamundi Foundation, Copag is launching a genderless deck aimed at giving more representation to the LGBTQIA+ community. The artists' cards and their biography can be seen on the Catarse.me Platform, which also allows internet users to support the project through donations and the purchase of the deck. The proceeds will be fully donated to Casa1, a center for culture and hospitality for the LGBTQIA+ community.
The idea arrives in Brazil shortly after forensic psychology graduate Indy Mellink, 23, a Dutch card fan, created a genderless deck, replacing images of the king, queen and jack with gold, silver and bronze. Encouraged by her father, Mellink decided it was time to break with the centuries-old tradition of sexual inequality in decks of cards that put men above women.
"If we have this hierarchy that the king is worth more than the queen, then that subtle inequality influences people in their daily lives because it's just another way of saying 'hey, you're less important,'" she said in an interview with Reuters. "Even subtle inequalities like this play a big role."
Friends and family bought the first 50 decks of gold, silver and bronze cards, which have images of gold bars, silver coins and a bronze shield. Mellink did more and started selling them online. In just a few months, she sent around 1,500 packages, including to Belgium, Germany, France and the United States. She said game stores have also shown interest.
