With the legalization of sports betting, websites have multiplied, especially focused on football. As a result, the number of complaints related to difficulties in receiving bonuses and in redeeming prizes, among others, also grew. Due to the absence of regulation and the fact that the bookmakers are not in Brazil, it is almost impossible for anyone who feels wronged to seek the Judiciary and succeed.
Lawyer Leandro Pamplona, who directs the area of the start up Acordos Brasil focused on sports betting, believes in rapid regulation of the sector and users who eventually feel harmed will have the Judiciary at their disposal, “but this can cause a great amount of processes”, since users did not always understand well the rules of bookmakers.
To avoid the need to go to court, both for the length of a process that can take up to eight years and involve high costs, “it is important that bookmakers adopt the so-called Online Dispute Resolution (ODR), an alternative and totally online for conflict resolution,” said Pamplona, exemplifying that eBay adopts the solution and manages more than 60 million conflicts a year.
Acordos Brasil is developing a platform dedicated to the online betting market with the aim of resolving possible conflicts between bettors and bookmakers quickly, cheaply and effectively, through agreements, preventing these disputes from knocking on the door of the Judiciary.
According to Pamplona, the division is in formation and will soon offer its services to the Brazilian market. “We are making the last adjustments and starting a testing phase with some bookmakers,” he concluded.
