Candidate for Amazonas government proposes to install 'casinos in indigenous villages'

If elected, candidate Henrique Oliveira (Podemos), has a project ready to install casinos on indigenous lands in the Amazon, Brazil. The government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is also one of those who come out in defense of these establishments in the villages, which, according to them, will serve to boost tourism in the region and open paths in the forests to the towns of isolated communities.

The subject was on the agenda of the debate between candidates for governor of the state, held by Band Amazonas. The proposal is seen as absurd. "Henrique is only physical, he lacks intelligence and discernment and this is the only project he should have for Amazonas," mocked internet users in front of the debate and proportional candidates.

In the opinion of Henrique Oliveira, the casinos will boost the economy and open paths through the forests to the villages of isolated peoples. Also according to the candidate, “there is structure in the forest and in the municipalities of Amazonas for casinos to operate 'widely' in the state.”

Casinos for lobbyists

It is not today that Amazonas is being considered for the release of gambling, legalized operation of ‘jogo do bicho’ betting houses.

Parliamentarians from other states and from Amazonas, have discussed a project, considered, to be authorized by the Ministry of Tourism. But, nothing about opening casinos in indigenous villages.

In March of this year, the Chamber approved Bill 444/1991, to legalize gambling (casinos and bingos). Waiting in the Senate, however, Senator Eduardo Girão (Podes-CE) evaluated that the release of betting games is only of interest to lobbyists.
