The subject is discussed in the wake of the expansion of the sports betting market in Brazil. Today, 33 clubs in the Brazilian Championship have some sponsorship from sports betting platforms. The 20 teams that compete in Serie A are sponsored by companies linked to sports betting houses. In the B Series, 13 have partnerships with the segment.
Reason for great debate due to the potential to generate revenue, sports betting has been legalized in Brazil since 2018, through federal law 13,756. Regulation by the federal government is still lacking, and the deadline for this to be done ends in December 2022. The law allows companies to operate in Brazil, but, as it is not yet a regulated activity in the country, they must be headquartered abroad.
This sector already moves billions of reais in the country. According to an estimate made by the Sports Value consultancy, Brazilians move something around R$ 4 billion (14bln) in sports betting per year. The government has made an estimate considered conservative that it can collect R$400 million (US$ 76m) to R$700 (US$ 135m) million in taxes from the regulation of betting sites.
The Brasil Sports Betting Summit is a congress held by BFExpo in partnership with Sports Betting Community (SBC), a company that produces content on the subject. There will be two days of debates on the process of regulating sports betting and the expansion of this market in the country, with the participation of Brazilian and foreign experts.
On the 6th of September, at 9 am, the event will discuss exactly this topic in the panel "Regulation of Sports Betting with a focus on Latin America". The speakers will be the assistant secretary, Alexandre Massa, and the undersecretary for special affairs, Iuri Castro, from the Economic Monitoring Secretariat, of the Ministry of Economy; Ludovico Calvi, Senior Executive Advisor to the Sports Betting Market and Member of the Global Lottery Monitoring System Executive Committee; Magnho Jose, president of the Instituto Brasileiro Jogo Legal; and Rafael Rodrigo Bruno and Carlos Gonçalves Junior, partners at the law firm GBSA.
“We will talk about the entire betting lifecycle from its inception to the dynamics of a transparent operation, and the strong commitment to integrity, responsible gaming and social responsibility,” says Ludovico Calvi. "The aim is to provide the public with all information and strategic input based on global best practices with regards to the management of a newly established sports betting organization."
The following day, also at 9 am, the panel theme will be "Sports Betting Market in Brazil - Opportunities and Challenges for Football Clubs and Operators". The debate will be in charge of Martin Lycka, senior vice president responsible for US regulatory affairs at Entain and member of the Board of Directors of the American Gaming Association and the National Council on Gaming Issues; representatives of sports betting platform EstrelaBet; Alberto Simão, executive director of women's football at Palmeiras; Jorge Avancini, vice president of marketing at Internacional (RS); Rafael Soares, marketing director at Santos; and Rodrigo Ganem, commercial director of Botafogo.
"The sports betting market in Brazil is about to take a big step after years of slow progress," says Rasmus Sojmark, CEO and founder of Sports Betting Community (SBC). He states that, although SBC has a presence in Latin America with its news website and through the SBC Summit event, joining BFExpo "creates the right environment for professionals in the sector to discover what the country expects of them" and the Brazil represents an important market.
"The moment is for reflection on the sports betting model in Brazil. It is necessary to find an efficient way to internalize this market in the national economic contexto," adds Rafael Bruno, a partner at GBSA.
In its second edition, BFExpo 22 will have more than 200 speakers who will be distributed in about 70 courses in the areas that involve football inside and outside the four lines.
