Mega Millions jackpot soars to US$1.35 billion becoming second largest in history

The Mega Millions jackpot has reached an estimated US$1.35 billion, the second-largest in the lottery’s history, after no winner snagged the big prize in Tuesday night’s drawing. That’s a boost from Tuesday’s jackpot of $1.1 billion, which saw no tickets match all six winning numbers of 7, 13, 14, 15, 18 and the Mega Ball 9. Next drawing takes place this Friday (13).

Mega Millions accumulated for the 25th time and will pay out, if someone hits six tens (5 plus the “Mega Ball”), the incredible amount of US$ 1.35 billion.

Mega Millions works differently from the Brazilian lottery. The estimated US$1.35 billion jackpot would only be distributed to a winner who chooses an annuity paid over 29 years. Most jackpot winners take a cash option, which for Friday night’s drawing is an estimated US$707.9 million.

Winners are also taxed with federal and state taxes, which leads to a reduction in the prize.

The chances of winning a Mega Millions jackpot are extremely slim, with the odds standing at 1 in 302.6 million.

Mega Millions is played in 45 US states, as well as Washington and the Virgin Islands. It is possible to place bets outside the United States through partner sites of the American operator, including The Lotter, which can be accessed from Brazil. Mega Millions tickets cost US$5.
