Eduardo Paes, mayor of Rio de Janeiro, held a meeting with representatives of the games sector and announced the creation of the Games and eSports Coordination as a way to recognize the activity as an important sport modality.
“Rio, capital of eSports! Rio recognizes eSports as an important sport modality that brings with it the most important principles of sports practice such as discipline, focus, social inclusion and competition,” said Eduardo Paes on social networks.
When announcing the creation of the coordination directly linked to his office, Paes declared that his objective “is to make the city of Rio de Janeiro the world capital of eSports.”
The mayor's move comes after the controversy caused by the new Minister of Sports, Ana Moser, who declared that eSports should not be considered a sport and that her portfolio will not invest in the practice.
Participating in the meeting with Eduardo Paes were the presenter Nyvi Estephan; the narrator Tácio "Schaeppi"; the co-founder of FURIA André Akkari; the owner of Black Dragons, Nicolle "Cherrygumms"; the director of Miners Marcelo Fadul; the CEO of Player1, Leandro Valentim; and journalists Bárbara Gutierrez and Chandy Teixeira.
