In recent months, I have been following more intensely the regulatory discussions about the Brazilian sports betting market. My intention is to monitor and contribute to the implementation of the presidential decree that will regulate the sports betting market in the country.
Law No. 13,756, signed on December 12, 2018, would have to be implemented by December 2022. Unfortunately, this deadline has expired and we have not yet had the publication of the long-awaited and indispensable rule by our Ministry of Economy.
In general terms, regulation could be justified by a tripod of benefits for our country:
1 - Economic impact: collection of direct taxes, investments and generation of formal jobs – this market only in 2021 moved more than R$ 100 billion in bets in the country.
2 - Prevention of ludopathy. Or as we say in the segment, the adoption of Responsible Gambling: here we would have awareness campaigns and preventive monitoring of the activity to protect consumers and mitigate the compulsion for sports betting;
3 - Integrity of the sport: by organizing and requiring ostentatious monitoring of sporting events, we ensure the transparency of competitions not only in Brazil, but outside it as well. *
As a member of the segment, I feel responsible for promoting this agenda. And I remain hopeful that regulation will happen soon, even if formally delayed.
Hope gains momentum with a new government that is expected to be more sensitive to the benefits of regulation.
We are moving forward towards a formalised and sustainable market.
And, you, what do you think about the upcoming events in the segment?
* For those who do not know, the manipulation of results in sport is, yes, a not negligible risk. Regulation is one of the most effective measures to combat this.
