While Brazil finds itself in a waiting time, without regulation of sports betting having come out of the government's paper and drawer, the United States celebrates important figures in the sector. The move is expected to exceed US$ 80 billion, since by October the amounts reached US$ 73.3 billion. New York alone contributed US$13 billion to the total.
The figures are from the Variety Intelligence Platform report and show a consolidated value of US$73.3 billion spent on online sports betting between January and October in the country. This represents an increase of 98% compared to the same period in 2021, 569% compared to 2020 and 2,268% compared to the total reached in 2019.
In November, US$6.3 billion in sports betting was recorded in the country, but the amount may have been much higher, as not all states had their totals consolidated when the report was released.
New York leads
Of the states that have already provided information, New York had the highest stake in 2022, with US$13 billion, surpassing New Jersey's US$8.1 billion.
At the time the report was drafted, making an online bet at a sporting event was legal in 25 states plus the district of columbia. More states, including Massachusetts and Ohio, are expected to legalize this practice in 2023, helping to increase the total amount wagered.
