Operators that earns up to US$20 million per year breaks with current project, says lawyer

The way it was approved in the Chamber, the project that provides for companies to pay a tax rate of 18% on revenue obtained from games breaks operators that earn up to R$100 million (US$ 20m) per year, says lawyer Ticiano Gadêlha, partner at Tôrres Gadêlha Advocacia. For him, operators hope that the 18% rate will be reduced in the Senate.

The office represents a group which manages five sports betting houses. “As it stands, the overwhelming majority of Bets operations cannot survive,” he states.

According to him, the Senate is looking into the issue. "It's kind of a consensus that this percentage should go down," says the lawyer, who expresses his opinion on a personal level.

He also states that the senators are re-discussing a calibration in the distribution of resources, as they consider that education was underprivileged — public security should cede part to the sector.

"They [deputies] ended up giving in a lot to try to include everyone in this percentage. It's well distributed, but the education percentage doesn't make much sense being down there," says Gadêlha.

In the Chamber, the project was approved with an addition that can allow online casinos and betting on virtual game competitions, eSports. In the Senate, however, there is resistance to the item, which should end up falling.
