Bill is under discussion in the House

President of the Senate meets with Lula and said that sports betting is on agenda

The president of Brazil’s Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, met this Thursday night with President Lula. In a note, Pacheco informed that the topic of the conversation was the fiscal crisis in Minas Gerais and 'issues of interest to the country and the Federal Senate', including the project that regulates sports betting and will guarantee extra revenue for the federal government.

Pacheco said he also spoke with Lula about advancing Tax Reform. The proposed amendment to the Constitution on the topic was approved by the Senate last week and now needs to undergo a new vote by deputies. The president of the Senate told Globo that he and Lula believe that the PEC will be enacted this year.

Regarding the bill that taxes offshore funds, which are located abroad mainly in tax havens, and exclusive funds, closed to high income, and the project that regulates sports betting, the senator stated that the topics were objects of the conversation with the president, but in a more punctual manner.

The initiatives are in the government's interest to increase revenue. They have already been approved by the Chamber and are awaiting analysis by the Senate.

“Just in general terms. Nothing specific. We will move forward in the Senate,” said Pacheco, about the project that regulates sports betting.

Regarding the fiscal situation in Minas Gerais, the president of the Senate stated in a note that he expressed his concern about the matter to Lula. He also said that he will speak with the governor of Minas, Romeu Zema (Novo), with the team of the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, and with the Legislative Assembly of Minas to reach an agreement on the matter.

In addition to the economic agenda, the government still needs to prepare in the Senate for voting on vacancies in the PGR and STF. The nominations will need to be confirmed by senators. The posts have been vacant for over a month and the President of the Republic has not yet decided who he will nominate.
