Macau sets post-pandemic gambling revenue record in October

Macau’s gross gaming revenues hit a new post-pandemic high in October, climbing 30.9% compared with September to US$2.42 billion. The result was also 400% higher than the same month in 2022, according to information from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ).

The DICJ reported on Wednesday (1) that gross gaming revenue in the gambling region rose 400% year-over-year in October to US$2.42 billion to top the consensus expectation for a gain of 392%.

The monthly gross gaming revenue mark was also 30.6% higher from the level seen in September and the strongest since the very start of the pandemic.

Having seen subdued results in September as a result of Super Typhoon Saola and ongoing weather events, October was boosted by the National Day Golden Week holiday, with 932,365 visitor arrivals at an average of 116,545 per day representing 84% of 2019 levels.

Analysts have likewise noted significant recovery in the lucrative premium mass segment including increases in average bets per player.

For the first ten months of 2023, Macau gross gaming revenue was up 316% year-over-year to US$18.4 billion. The return of live performances and industry conferences has boosted traffic in Macau over the last few months and the Macau hotel occupancy rate continues to improve.

The Government of Macau has predicted that gaming income will reach US$26.8 billion in the coming year and will make sure that it remains the primary source of revenue for the aforementioned jurisdiction.
