Rio de Janeiro governor prohibits sports betting not authorized by Loterj in the state

The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, ordered the prohibition of sports betting and other lottery modalities in the state without the concession of Loterj. In a decree published in the Official Gazette, Castro determines that not only the operation is prohibited, but also communication, advertising and marketing actions by companies that are not authorized by the municipality.

Decree 48,806, published in the Official Gazette of Rio de Janeiro, establishes conditions to be met by those interested in exploring lottery modalities, including sports betting. It expressly prohibits the offering of any type of game that is not authorized by Loterj.

Furthermore, it determines that the exclusive use by the operator of the payment method contracted by Loterj for managing and processing payments for bets and prizes is mandatory.

The decree defines that national or foreign companies may request authorization to operate lottery modalities as long as they are regularly established in Brazil and meet Loterj's requirements.

The exploitation of any game in the state without the authorization of the municipality is prohibited, as well as the carrying out of advertising and commercial advertising by websites and companies without having a license from Loterj or the Union.

Payment method companies must stop services provided to operators that do not have a license within 48 hours of being notified by the municipality.

By the decree, sports administration entities will prohibit, in their competition regulations, sports organizations and athletes from publishing the names and brands of companies that offer or explore lottery modalities, in all their properties or marketing spaces that do not also have granted by Loterj or the Union.
