The city of Rio de Janeiro will host the biggest competition between electronic sports countries in the Americas in 2024: the Panamerican Esports Games Rio-2024. The announcement was made by the International Esports Federation (FieS). The event will be between June 1st and 9th next year. The location is yet to be defined.

Mayor Eduardo Paes, on social media, celebrated the choice of Rio as host city:

There will be at least four modalities, hundreds of athletes and thousands of spectators. It's a new moment in eSport, with competitions between countries. Rio will be one of the biggest hubs for international eSports events in 2024.

The expectation is that the best gamers from Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, United States, Chile, Venezuela, Bahamas, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Uruguay will participate in the tournament. They will compete for places at the World Championships in Ryad, Saudi Arabia.

"Rio de Janeiro is the capital of innovation in Latin America and is a city with a tradition of sport and inclusion. Here we have already hosted the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup final in 2014. And we treat Esport as a traditional sporting modality. It is with great joy that we are going to inaugurate this new moment in eSport, with competition between countries and bringing together the entire continent," says Chandy Teixeira, Games and Esports coordinator at Rio City Hall.

In addition to offering world-class competition, the event will feature interactive activities, networking opportunities and educational programs to inspire and support the next generation of gamers. There will be 24-hour broadcasting on the PlayPlus platform and exclusive coverage on Record TV and the R7 portal.

The International Esports Federation (FIeS) is the international body that represents the interests of electronic sports around the world.
