Betting regulation is the only way for Brazilian authorities to control the sector

A vote in the Plenary of the Federal Senate is scheduled for this Tuesday (12) on Bill 3626-2023, which regulates sports betting and online gaming in Brazil. Faced with the imminent approval of the matter, the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) released an official note signed by its president, Wesley Cardia, in which he stated that “it is the only way for authorities to control the sector, providing security to the population and companies who want to invest in the country seriously and with legal certainty.”

Sports betting and online gaming have been a reality in the country for many years. But the thousands of websites that explore these modalities are not subject to any type of State control.

Therefore, regulation is the only way for authorities to control the sector, providing security to the population and companies that want to invest in the country seriously and with legal certainty.

These types of games are means of fun and pastime. Avoiding misleading advertising that preaches easy gain or enrichment is the task of public and private rules that are yet to be established with regulation; as well as prohibiting the use of platforms by minors and people with gambling addiction.

What seems difficult for some people to understand is that today you can do anything; and this will continue to be the case if the regulation is not approved. That simple.

Which leads us to ask: what is the real interest of those who are against regulating sports betting and online gaming? Why this interest in maintaining an activity without any supervision from the authorities?

Fighting for non-regulation is the same as defending illegal gambling with the harm associated with lack of control.

ANJL believes and hopes that the examination and voting by the Federal Senate will create clear rules for gaming operators, for those who have fun playing, and for the country's economy, which will raise hundreds of millions of reales each year.
