Lira confirms the Chamber will vote on regulation of sports betting next week

The president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira, said this Friday (15) that deputies should vote next week on the regulation of sports betting, a project that is part of the finance minister's fundraising agenda, Fernando Haddad. The text was approved by the Senate with changes and, therefore, returned to the Chamber for analysis.

"I wanted to pass on an agenda to all of you. We should look into it, and Celso (Sabino, Minister of Tourism) asked, during this next week, about the vote on the regularization of online gaming, which is the starting point so that resources can also go to Tourism," said Lira during a speech at the opening ceremony of the 2023 National Tourism Exhibition, in Brasília.

The event also included the participation of the Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, the president of Embratur, Marcelo Freixo, and the vice-governor of the Federal District, Celina Leão (PP).

The Senate approved last Tuesday (12) the sports betting project. Its rapporteur, senator Angelo Coronel (PSD-BA), reduced the rate charged on gross revenue from games, minus the prizes paid to bettors, from 18% to 12%.

The senator also proposed reducing the fee charged to bettors from 30% to 15% on winnings exceeding R$2,112, as a way of not alienating bettors from legalized betting sites. Coronel also decided to change the taxation calculation system, so that it is done on an annualized basis, and not prize by prize.

The text also requires that 20% of companies be owned by a Brazilian partner, as a way of holding a Brazilian citizen or legal entity responsible in the event of any legal problem.
