For Embratur, legalization of bingos and gaming in Brazil is on the horizon

The issue of gaming legalization in Brazil gains a new stage, as Marcelo Freixo, president of Embratur (Brazilian Tourist Board), admits to discussing the subject in the sense of how much the activity can contribute to tourism. “It can be important as long as it is done very carefully and responsibly. But it is something that is on our horizon,” stated Freixo.

In an interview with Rádio BandNews, the president of Embratur, Marcelo Freixo, admitted the possibility of resuming discussions for the legalization of the gaming sector in Brazil as a way to increase tourism.

For Freixo, the bill approved in the Chamber of Deputies and still pending discussion and voting in the Senate, is subject to debate.

“It is an activity that heats up tourism and that can be important as long as it is done with great care and responsibility. But it is something that is on our horizon,” he said.

Even though the director took over Embratur so recently, admitting that gaming is on the entity's horizon is a breath of fresh air for the sector, which has been fighting for years to approve a legal framework in Brazil.

“This law was approved in the Chamber of Deputies and needs to be approved in the Senate, that is the reality. I think that's a reality in many places... and the gaming situation needs to be looked at very carefully."

For him, “the debate involves Public Security, it involves a debate with the Federal Police about money laundering and we cannot be irresponsible.”

Marcelo Freixo has excellent transit in the administration of the Lula government, having already been appointed to the transition team of the elected federal government. When starting the work ahead of the area that discussed the directions of tourism, he detected the low budget of the portfolio for the development of the activity in Brazil and the need to implement measures to increase the resources to be applied in the sector.

Now, by admitting the possibility of discussing the approval of a legal framework for the gaming sector in Brazil, he takes an important step for the activity to contribute to the development of tourism in the country.
