According to Statista, a platform specializing in data analysis and monitoring, the amount involved in Gamers8 will become a record when surpassing The International 2021, the Dota 2 world championship two years ago, which rewarded participants in a total amount close to of US$ 40 million.
The difference is that The International is a single-mode tournament, while Gamers8 involves multiple games. For 2023, the games that will be part of the festival have not yet been announced, but the previous year there were tournaments for Dota 2, Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, Rainbow Six and Rocket League.
The total amount of the prize tripled in relation to Gamers8 2022. At the time, U$$ 15 million was divided among the teams involved in the five tournaments that the ceremony hosted.
The main supporter of the festival is the Saudi Esports Federation, the body responsible for fostering the development of the gamer community and training professionals in electronic sports in the country. The convention will not only feature tournaments, but also musical performances and events aimed at those interested in learning more about game development.
Saudi Arabia has adopted the policy of seeking to host major sporting events in a practice known as sportswashing. This strategy aims to improve the country's image, which is closely linked to the violation of human rights, especially those related to women and the LGBTQIAP+ community.
