Now it depends on President Arthur Lira

Betting CPI request is filed at Chamber with 205 signatures

A request was filed this Tuesday (14) for the Chamber of Deputies to create a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate match-fixing schemes in football matches in Brazil. An initiative by Deputy Felipe Carreras, the request has the signature of 204 other parliamentarians. The constitution of the commission now depends on Chamber’s President Arthur Lira, who has promised to do so.

The leader of the PSB in the Chamber, deputy Felipe Carreras (PE), filed this Tuesday (14) a request to create a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) with the objective of investigating schemes of manipulation of results in football matches and betting sports.

"The concern about the integrity of matches has been growing in recent years, especially due to the growth of online betting. Match manipulation has evolved and become much more sophisticated and targeted, even reaching other sports modalities," says the application.

The proposal received the support of 205 deputies, more than the 171 needed to be processed, and now depends on the approval of Chamber’s President Arthur Lira (PP-AL), to be installed. Lira, according to local media Valor, was supporting the investigation behind the scenes.

The Lula (PT) government also provided support, with the aim of preventing the creation of CPIs harmful to the Executive. Only five commissions of inquiry can function at the same time, and the government supporters' intention is to "congest" the queue.
