Return of ‘Libertadores do Poker’ has millionaire numbers in Rio de Janeiro

With players from 30 countries, the expected return of the Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT), the South American main poker championship, was a huge success. The tournament delivered R$ 8.57 million (US$ 1.65m) in total prize money, more than triple the guaranteed prize pool of R$ 2.5 million (US$ 474,000).

The Latin American Poker Tour is the main poker tour in Latin America. The event was on hiatus for seven years and returned between March 2nd and 6th, at Windsor Marapendi, in Rio de Janeiro.

The ‘wonderful city’ was chosen as the venue for the return because it also hosted the first stage of the LAPT's history, back in 2008.

The event was a public success. No less than 30 countries were represented and nearly 2,000 entries were made in the five days of the event.

The title of the Main Event, the main tournament of the entire stage, went to the Brazilian Anthony Barranqueiros, who won R$ 650,000 (US$ 123,150) for the first place.

LAPT CEO Devanir Campos highlighted the success of the LAPT comeback stage after seven years.

“Integrating players from so many regions of the world only strengthen Latin American poker. The circuit will extend throughout the region over the next few months, highlighting Latin America on the world stage of the sport,” he comments.

The next leg of the LAPT is scheduled to take place between April 28th and May 2nd, at Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco, in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Two other stages are scheduled for the city of São Paulo, in July and November, and another with a location still to be defined by the organization.
